In class with George Carlin
Brian Baresch | University of Texas, Austin
I like to start my editing labs with some sort of presentation involving popular culture, to get students interested. My favorite is a clip of George Carlin.
He talks about unnecessary verbiage in a humorous way. I tell the students that in this bit he shows the soul of an editor. And it's only a few minutes long. This clip could lead into a discussion of phrases we're all familiar with that would evoke Carlin's disdain, with students encouraged to think up humorous rejoinders in the Carlin style.
