HED SCORING SHEET Based on scale of 100 points maximum divided by number of heds – that is, 4 heds = 25 points each. Therefore, if student completes only three heds, the maximum possible grade is 75, minus any of the following:
Fact error: -10-20 points
Libelous hed
Misspelling : -10
Style error : -5
Hanging preposition: -10
All other grammar: -5
Punctuation: -5
Syntax error (e.g., muddled hed): -5
Alphabet soup (excessive abbrevs): -5
Split modifier : -5
Stacked modifiers : -5
Vague reference (e.g., using the name “Smith”): -5
“Orphan” hed (lacks source): -10
Hed too long (e.g., a 2-36-2 hed counts out at 17): -10
Hed too short (same hed is 13, one count less than 14 min: - 5
Miscounted hed (student says it’s 15 but it’s actually 15.5, even though 15.5 is acceptable for a 2-36-2 hed): -5
Exceptionally clever : +10 points
