Poynter was created in 1975 by Nelson Poynter, chairman of the St. Petersburg Times. In 1978, he donated his controlling stock in Times Publishing Co. to the institute, which has become perhaps the industry's largest independent, nonprofit school for journalists.

In 1993, the Freedom Forum issued a report called "No Train, No Gain" on the lack of training and education for newsroom staffs. That report spawned an annual conference of training editors who work to improve the state of journalism training. The trainers, who now meet under Poynter auspices, decided to share their training materials though this Web site.

The newsroom training editors who began meeting annually with the Freedom Forum's blessing and support - they now meet at the Poynter Institute - decided to pull their best ideas into annual reports, written by Jim Clark. The first of three volumes is subtitled "Collected Wisdom of the Sage" and is a handbook on setting up a training program.
